Chapter Ten

Two days later, with Jazzy gone to Niagara Falls, I was bored. Very bored.

And lonely.

So lonely that I was sitting in my shed, talking to my worms. Talking to plants helps them, because humans breathe out what plants breathe in, but talking to worms doesn’t help the worms. As far as I know.

Also, they never talk back. Or get your jokes.

But Dad was at work and Bubby was inside playing mah-jongg with her old lady friends in the rec room. That meant I couldn’t even watch TV.

So I was hanging out with my worms. I’d already done the day’s weeding and harvesting, so there was nothing left to do in the garden. I’d even cleaned all my tools and taken a pile of cherry tomatoes in to my grandmother and her friends.

They’d oohed and ahhed but then quickly returned to their game. The tiles made clacking noises as they moved them around. When the ladies got noisy and started laughing about old-lady stuff, I went back to my shed.

I took my phone out of my pocket. No new messages from Jazzy. The night before she’d texted me to tell me I’d been right. Niagara Falls was fun. She’d even sent me some pictures. My favorite was the one from the aviary. Jazzy had a bright red and green parrot on her shoulder. Across the photo she’d written Me and my second-best friend!

I tried not to feel jealous. But it was hard knowing she was having such a good time. And I was stuck talking to worms.

I had an idea. I stuck my hand deep into the worm bin and pulled one out. “Hi there, Wiggles,” I said, wiping some of the dirt off it.

I placed the worm on my shoulder and took a selfie. The worm wiggled off and fell onto the floor. I scooped it up and put it back into the bin. “See ya, Wiggles.”

Then I sent the selfie to Jazzy.
